In a groundbreaking move for the military community, soldiers of the 9 Malawi Rifles at the Changalume Barracks have unveiled their very first publication; Changalume Barracks Magazine. Through a series of articles, stories, and interviews, the publication invites the reader into the challenges, triumphs, and solidarity of the soldiers from the mountainous battalion.

According to the publication’s Managing Editor, Lieutenant Gladwel Mnyenyembe, the publication is not merely to inform but to inspire and cultivate a culture of reading and writing among soldiers, whilst also bolstering civil-military relations by sharing insights into the day-to-day events within the barracks. “We believe that fostering a love for reading and writing not only enhances the intellectual capabilities of our soldiers but also strengthens their ability to communicate effectively both within our unit and with the civilian community.” He enlightened. The magazine covers a wide range of topics, from personal narratives of soldiers’ professional journeys to informative pieces on military tactics and strategies among others.

Reacting to the development, Private John Kansengwa one of the contributors featured in the publication, expressed excitement as the initiative has offered him and his colleagues a platform to express their writing prowess. “It’s a fantastic platform for us to share our stories, connect with our fellow soldiers, and bridge the gap between the military and civilians. I hope it will inspire others to pick up a pen and start writing.” He said. As the first copies of the magazine make their way into the hands of eager readers, the mountainous military unit looks forward to the positive impact the publication will have on fostering a culture of literacy, and creativity amongst soldiers at the Unit.

With the publication, Changalume Barracks becomes the first MDF Unit to issue a magazine this year, and is the first ever Unit from the Eastern Region of Malawi to have debuted such a publication.
