Believe it or not, seeking help from a professional is not the only way to achieve mental wellbeing. We may all need healthy minds, but not everyone needs to go to therapy. Others simply aren’t willing or ready. There are countless ways to achieve this goal.
Some of them might surprise you. Getting enough sleep is one of the most basic ways to get started. A lot of us associate sleep deprivation with bad moods. There is a scientific reason for that. Not getting enough sleep is known to increase negative emotional responses to stressors, which makes it difficult to cope with even the smallest of them. Well rested people are more mentally equipped to regulate their emotions and behaviours.
Interestingly enough, journaling is a very effective way to help with mental wellness. It encompasses everything from keeping track of healthy habits and setting goals for yourself to venting frustration after a hard day and expressing gratitude. It is a good way to release stress and deal with your emotions. Those prone to anxiety and bouts of depression, in particular, stand to benefit the most from journaling.
Meditation has also been known to go handin-hand with mental wellbeing. It is a mind and body practice where you learn to focus your attention and awareness. It is used to give a sense of calm, peace and balance in order to benefit one’s emotional well-being and inner peace. It is a hit or miss, as meditation does not work for everyone, this author included. Luckily, we live in an age where an app to try it for yourself is only a download away.
The truth is that there are a lot of small things you probably do throughout the day that add to your mental wellbeing. Something as small as sharing a coffee with a friend, watching TV with your family or even taking the time to work on your hobby does more than we realise. As long as you have a healthy way to rid yourself of the stressors in your life, you’re probably headed in the right direction.
